July 21, 2006 - Amarillo Gorillas Head Coach Joe Ferras has been named an Assistant Coach with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League, following a successful five year run with Amarillo. The Sound Tigers serve as the AAA affiliate of the National Hockey League’s New York Islanders, and announced the addition of Ferras to their staff earlier this week along with Head Coach Dan Marshall Associate Coach Jack Capuano.
“Joe has a passion for the game that is unparallel in the hockey world. He has the pedigree of coaching experience and more importantly Joe has the ability to teach players at any level of the game.” Bridgeport Sound Tigers President Howard Saffan continued, “We are absolutely thrilled about the addition of Joe and we look forward to helping him continue to move up the coaching ladder.”
Ferras posted a record of 161-132-23 in 316 games over his five seasons in Amarillo, leading the club to post-season play each of the past four years, including back-to-back appearances in 03-04 and 04-05 in the CHL’s Southern Conference Finals. His 161 career coaching wins place him tied for 11th all-time in the combined Central/Western Professional Hockey League record books.
CHL President Brad Treliving wished Ferras well, stating ‘Joe has had a very significant and positive impact on both the Central Hockey League and the Amarillo organization over the past five seasons, and his hiring further displays our commitment to advancing coaches, players and staff members to higher level organizations.”
Quotes from Joe Ferras
“On a professional level this is a great opportunity. I am grateful for this opportunity and thank Mr. Saffan and the entire New York Islanders organization. I am extremely excited to get started with the Sound Tigers alongside Head Coach Dan Marshall and Assistant Coach Jack Capuano.”
“There are no words to express my appreciation for the local ownership group, who have become lifelong friends and gave me my first opportunity to break into the professional coaching ranks,” said Ferras. The city of Amarillo and the community have been absolutely tremendous to me and have made me feel welcome in their community. Over the course of five years, I have been fortunate enough to have great friendships with the fans and corporate partners. It is extremely important to me to see this organization continue to develop and stay at the elite level that it has attained over the last five years. Both the community of Amarillo and the local ownership group deserves this success. I thank everyone in the community for their continued support of Amarillo Gorillas hockey.”
The CHL will begin celebration of its 15th year of play on October 20th, 2006, welcoming three clubs joining the League in new state-of-the-art arenas for the 2006-2007 season. The expansion Arizona Sundogs (Prescott Valley Convention & Events Center) and Rocky Mountain Rage (Broomfield Event Center) will open new facilities this fall along with the New Mexico Scorpions, returning from a one year hiatus in conjunction with the opening of the Santa Ana Star Center. The CHL has led all of ‘AA’ professional hockey in average attendance for the past five consecutive seasons of play, completing the 2005-2006 campaign with an average of 4,663 fans per game. |
