Knights coach charged with impaired driving
Fri, July 28, 2006
By APRIL KEMICK, LONDON FREE PRESS REPORTER
The head coach of the London Knights junior hockey team is facing two drunk driving charges, London police confirmed Friday.
Dale Hunter, co-owner, president and head coach of the 2005 Memorial Cup champion Knights, was arrested early Monday on Wonderland Road, said Const. Joel Pavoni.
The former NHLer, credited with turning around the flagging franchise after buying the team in 2000 with his brother, Mark, was charged after police pulled over a car about 1:10 a.m. July 24, Pavoni said.
“He was arrested and charged with impaired driving,” Pavoni said.
Hunter was charged with impaired driving and driving with a blood-alcohol ratio higher than the legal allowable limit, 80 milligrams, he said.
Pavoni wouldn’t disclose details of the arrest or release blood-alcohol readings taken.
Those details will become public in court, Pavoni said.
Police didn’t say when Hunter’s first court appearance is scheduled.
Calls by The Free Press yesterday to both Hunter brothers weren’t returned.
Knights assistant general manager Jim McKellar said he wasn’t aware of the charges.
Dale Hunter, whose son and nephew are among the dozens of 15- to 20-year-old players he has coached, was named Ontario Hockey League coach of the year for two straight seasons, in 2004 and 2005.
He has also been honoured with the Canadian Hockey League coach of the year title.
This year, both Hunter brothers were named to the London mayor’s New Year's honours list for sports. |
