Each of the last two seasons the Jackalopes have had good fortune with bringing in rookies (Derek Dolson in ’04-’05 and Dominic Leveille in ’05-’06) that were able to contribute immediately to the teams success. With today’s signings of defenseman Alex Dunn and forward Josh Cartier, Head Coach & Director of Hockey Operations Don McKee believes that the Jackalopes will once again see great contributions from the rookie class.

ALEX DUNN

Alex Dunn joins the Jackalopes after four outstanding years at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and a short stint with the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL. “Alex had a fantastic career in the college ranks,” said McKee. “It would have been hard to find a 3rd line forward anywhere that could put up the point total that he was able to amass as a defender.” After college Dunn spent part of last season under the direction and tutelage of former Jackalopes assistant coach Derek Laxdal in Idaho.

Last season the Jackalopes searched for a defenseman that could anchor their power play. “Alex is a defenseman who can get very physical and is a good power play point man that we are seeking,” said McKee. “He is a complete defenseman with strong offensive and defensive skills and tactics, which I believe will be the key ingredient for our defensive success next season.”

“We have had huge success in signing rookies the past couple of years, with Derek Dolson ranking at the top of the league in goaltending in ’04-‘05 and Dominic Leveille being selected as an all-star last season,” said McKee. “We know that Alex is a great puck handler and believe that he will be a force for us on the blue line.”

JOSH CARTIER
Josh Cartier will join the Jackalopes as a training camp invitee this fall. He has spent the last 4 years at Salem State College in Salem, Massachusetts, where he was team captain of last season’s ECAC playoff squad. “Josh was a leader of the team last season by acting as captain and should add a special leadership quality during this year’s camp,” McKee said. “He is a power forward who had a great career at Salem State in the ECAC and hopes to continue his professional playing days in a Jackalopes sweater.”

With the addition of Dunn and Cartier the Jackalopes training camp roster now stands at twelve players. “In the coming weeks we plan to target players for our front line that have great scoring potential in the CHL,” said McKee. “We are in a position to add some high level talent between now and the beginning of training camp with the plan of looking in the direction of finesse goal scorers that can take the place of Sebastien Thinel and Dominic Leveille.”
