Just as the Amarillo Gorillas completed one community event last week, they’re preparing for another appearance this weekend. The Gorillas will be participating in this year’s KidsFest, which will be held this Saturday August 12th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Thompson Park. Gorillas General Manager Darren McLean along with Assistant GM Chuck Verdolino will be at the tennis courts in Thompson Park helping local kids hone their skills in blacktop hockey.

“We pride ourselves in our relationship with the community of Amarillo,” McLean said. “Events like this are the least we can do for all the support the community gives us in return. Plus it’s great to see the smiles on the kid’s faces.”

KidsFest began last year as the premier event to announce Amarillo’s commitment as a “Community of Promise” under America’s Promise program. The America’s Promise program, and KidsFest in particular, helps connect families and children with community resources.

KidsFest will mark a continuation of the Gorillas constant efforts to participate within the community of Amarillo. Just last week McLean camped out at the Civic Center parking lot for 12 hours a day for the entire week in an effort to help raise money for the March of Dimes. Each day McLean ate breakfast, lunch and dinner alongside a local celebrity and during the festivities fans could make a $100 donation to the March of Dimes in exchange for 10 tickets to the Gorillas home opener on Saturday October 21st.

During the week, the Gorillas were also conducting a drawing for the chance for one lucky fan to take home 4 season tickets, 4 Gorillas jerseys, a private box for opening night and a private party with the players at a date to be determined later in the season. And while the winner, Jeff Stephenson, might not have been a huge Gorillas fan before, he’s excited to become one this season.

“I’ve never actually been to a Gorillas game before,” Stephenson said. “But you can bet I’m going to be at all of them this year.”

Season ticket packages and corporate sponsorships for the 2006-2007 season are available now! Individual game tickets, once they go on sale, can be purchased at the Gorillas Hockey Office, located at 1934 Civic Circle off of I-40 and Georgia, the Civic Center Box Office and all Panhandle Ticket Outlets. These include Randy’s Music Mart, the West Texas Event Center in Canyon and United Supermarkets. Tickets can also be charged by phone at (806) 378-3096 or (806) 242-PUCK (7825).
