The old sports adage is defense wins championships and while it might seem cliché, the Amarillo Gorillas took one more big step today in helping to form another winning team for the upcoming season as they resigned three defensemen off last year’s roster. The Gorillas are pleased to announce they’ve come to terms with defensemen Kevin Wilson, Trevor Read and Trevor Socholotuk.
“It’s great to see players that really want to come back and play in Amarillo,” Gorillas Head Coach Jim Wiley said. “That speaks volumes about the quality of the organization and is just another indication this is going to be a special year.”
Wilson, a 6’, 190 pound defenseman from Thompson, Manitoba will be entering his second season patrolling the blue line for the Gorillas. During the 2005-2006 season, Wilson tallied 7 goals and 23 assists while playing in every one of the Gorillas 64 games. Wilson finished the regular season ranked 4th on the team with a +5 rating and became a serious offensive threat in the playoffs notching 3 points in just 6 postseason games. Before coming to Amarillo, Wilson spent two seasons with the San Angelo Saints (CHL) where he tallied 10 goals and 27 assists in 124 games.
Another player entering his second stint in Amarillo will be Trevor Read. The 6’1”, 215 pound Calgary, Alberta native is coming off an 05-06 campaign in which he totaled 2 goals and 10 assists in 46 games in a Gorillas uniform. Read began last season in Austin but was traded in early December after just 18 games with the Ice Bats. Before last season, Read had spent 3 seasons in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) where he compiled 18 goals and 68 assists during time with the Toledo Storm, Peoria Rivermen and Long Beach Ice Dogs.
Meanwhile, Trevor Socholotuk will seem like a veteran on this season’s squad. This will already be the 3rd season in Amarillo for Socholotuk who will turn 24 in mid-August. In two previous seasons with the Apes, the 5’11”, 190 pound Kenora, Ontario native tallied 5 goals and 18 assists, which includes 2 goals and 8 assists last year. |
