Thunder adds high-scoring forward
08/31/06 - Central Hockey League (CHL) Wichita Thunder

Wichita Thunder
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder added some scoring up front today, signing rookie center Jeremy Koning.

A native of Chatham, Ontario, Koning joins the Thunder following a very impressive four-year career at New England College, where he led the team in several scoring categories and won numerous awards.

After an impressive rookie season in 2002-03, Koning led the Pilgrims with four shorthanded goals his sophomore year and finished second with 18 goals and 39 points, trailing only Travis Banga, who has starred for the CHL's Memphis RiverKings the last two seasons. Koning received NEC's 2003-04 Unsung Hero Award.

The following season, Koning was named assistant captain and led the team with 25 assists and four game-winning goals. He again received NEC's Unsung Hero Award, was an ECAC East all Academic Team selection and was named to the Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Society.

Koning's senior season was by far his best. Serving as team captain, he led the team in 2005-06 in goals (19), assists (27), game-winners (3) and power play goals (7), while his 46 points were fourth most among all Division III players in the nation. The NEC Team MVP and Athlete of the Year, Koning also was named to both the ECAC East All-Tournament Team, All-Academic Team and again to the Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Society.

"Jeremy is a highly recommended player who had an outstanding college career", said Thunder head coach Mark French. "He is a hard-working player who moves the puck well and has a knack for putting the puck in the net."

The fifth highest scorer in NEC history, Koning finished his college career with 53 goals and 143 points in 110 career games. He graduated from New England College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sport and Recreation Management, with a minor in Business Administration. Following his NEC career he suited up for four postseason games with the UHL's Fort Wayne Komets.
